Users and usergroups
What are Users and Groups?
Groups:
A group is a collection of settings that determine what is displayed and available to end-users of your web site.
These settings include among others: menu items that can be displayed or hidden, privacy settings (like hiding details for living people), show or hide text items or sources etc. If you have multiple trees on your site you can also decide which trees will be shown or hidden for this group.
Users:
A user is a person who you have supplied with a username and password to access your web site. Once you have created a new user, you can connect him to a group. When this user logs in, he will be able to experience your site according to the settings that you have made for this group.
A user can only be connected to one group. However, a group can have as many users as you like.
Two special users are Admin and Guest.
“Guest” is a user who is not logged in and by default he is connected to the group “Guest”. Likely you will want to give this group the most restrictive settings.
“Admin” is you - the owner of the web site. This user will have most extensive privileges. You can create other users and connect them to the “Admin” group, meaning they have full access rights, identical to yours. Only do this if you completely trust a person, like a brother, wife etc.
Standard Users and Groups
The menus for users and groups can be accessed in the administration window under: Users > Users and Users > Groups
HuMo-genealogy already includes a few standard users and user groups.
The standard users are:*
Admin
Family
Guest
The standard user groups are:
Admin
Family
Guest
Group 4
Group 5
Group 6
These group names can be changed too and additional ones can be added.
Adding and changing Users and Groups
Both in the Users and in the Groups menu, names may be changed and other Users and Groups can be added.
It can be quite useful to make a new Group yourself, for example in order to allow specific users access to one or more family trees (see also below).
After a new Group is created, this Group can be attached to one or more Users. This is done in the menu “Users”.
Setting family trees by Group
In HuMo-genealogy you can display multiple family trees. It is possible to set which trees are visible to which groups!
This is done by the option (under the Group menu item): “Hide or show family trees per user group”.
If you hide all trees from Group “guest”, one HAS to log in before any data is displayed. (In other words the data on your site can not be seen by the wider public, only by those who you have supplied with a username and password). Those that are granted access you can divide in different Groups to see different sets of trees - according to your desire.
